Re: MEMO: Energy Costs and Corruption Tanking Republicans in Final Stretch
With just 3 weeks until Election Day, we are ramping up programming across the country to meet voters where they are to let them know about the candidates that have clear plans to lower utility costs and the ones who have sided with Big Oil, Monopoly Utilities, and corporate interests. This week we are also taking a look at a new analysis from Cook Political Report, stories from the field, and sharing ads that dropped on the airwaves this week.
New Analysis
Today, Cook Political Report released a new analysis that shifted 11 House races toward the democratic candidate. The analysis cited continued “frustrations with the federal and state governments’ handling of economic issues” as motivators. Last month, Cook Political also reported that energy costs and gas prices could be the determining factor for swing voters this election cycle.
New on the Air (and in your mailbox)
NEW: Today, LCV Victory Fund launched a new $250,000 digital ad program focused on Mike Bouchard (MI-10). The ad highlights Bouchard’s history of corporate interests funding his campaign and record of supporting Trump’s tariffs, which have driven costs up in Michigan. The spot also outlines Bouchard’s support of the Republican Tax Law, which has resulted in higher insurance premiums and utility costs for Michiganders. The digital ad will run on CTV, YouTube and social platforms.
This afternoon, Politico Playbook broke the news that we launched a $3 million digital ad campaign focused on Ken Paxton’s record of corruption and prioritizing personal financial gain over the people of Texas. The ads are running on YouTube, CTV and online video platforms in the Houston and Dallas media markets through November 3. This is the same area that door-to-door canvassing is currently underway, layering our engagement with Texans across two of the state’s three largest cities.
In Maine, LCV Victory Fund launched a $770,000 mail program focused on Susan Collins’ record of siding with President Trump. Susan Collins was named to this year’s Dirty Dozen list after an unprecedented reversal of her environmental record–falling from a 100% on the League of Conservation Voters Scorecard in 2008 to a 0% in 2024, and for her role in supporting the Republican Tax Law, also known as the “Big Ugly Bill,” which eliminated the tax credit for heat-pump installations and other clean-energy incentives popular in Maine because they help save Mainers money.
This week, LCV Victory Fund also launched $1.4 million in digital ads and mail in New Hampshire’s Senate race focused on former Senator John Sununu. This ad is running on CTV and YouTube through October 26.
Gaining Ground
By the numbers:
Across Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin:
- 1,446,171 doors knocked
- 162,472 door contacts
Notes from the Field:
- Florida: While canvassing in Broward County, we spoke with Miguel who is planning to vote for the first time. He let us know that climate change is a key motivator for him this cycle, but he had questions about the voting process. After discussing how to vote, Miguel said he is eager to cast his ballot for Jared Moskowitz and thanked us for the information.
- Nevada: In Las Vegas, we spoke with Sean, who let us know that he is paying more for gas and electricity than ever before. We shared information with him about Aaron Ford’s energy proposals to lower utility costs and Sean stated he plans to vote for Aaron Ford in November.
- Texas: In Houston, we spoke with Bobby who was quick to express all the economic challenges that have been affecting him for years, from gas prices to bills. He shared how his family has stepped in to help take care of him which feels like he is putting too much on them. He believes this election could provide the change in leadership that needs to happen.
- Wisconsin: In Eau Claire, we met Tina who believes the Republican Party has failed the American people and holds them responsible for the cost of living crisis, which is her primary concern. In this election, she let us know that she is focused on helping Democrats regain control.
