Re: Weekly LCV Victory Fund Update

With five weeks to go until Election Day …

Multiple states and Puerto Rico are working to recover from hurricanes made more destructive by climate change. Yet, Republican candidates around the country continue to duck the issue and resist holding the polluters, like the oil and gas industry, accountable.

Meanwhile in Nevada, Catherine Cortez Masto is up with an ad again reminding voters that Adam Laxalt tried to block an investigation into Big Oil. And Michael Bennet is touting how he’s helped bring solar jobs to the state.

LCV Victory Fund’s state affiliates added four candidates for governor to this year’s Dirty Dozen in the States list; Tim Michels in Wisconsin, Mark Ronchetti in New Mexico, Dan Cox in Maryland, and Bob Stefanowski in Connecticut. We know Governors have helped usher in some of the biggest climate wins over the last 10 years and will be critical to implementing new laws like the Inflation Reduction Act. Check out the full list here.

Chispa AZ, a program of LCV, announced their endorsements for the Arizona Corporation Commission, the body that oversees utilities in the state. They also committed to knocking on 200,000 doors before election day, focused on flipping two key seats on the Commission as well as talking to voters about candidates for Governor, Secretary of State, and state Senate districts 2, 4, 13, and 16.

We’d love to have reporters join us and our partners for a canvass in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania or Wisconsin in the coming weeks – please be in touch with National Communications Director Emily (esamsel@lcv.org) to arrange a visit.

As a reminder, this cycle, LCV Victory Fund is part of the joint $100 million Climate Votes Project with Climate Power Action, Climate Reality Action Fund, EDF Action Votes (EDF AV), NRDC Action Votes (NRDC AV), and NextGen PAC to elect climate champions.

Field Updates – LCVVF Field Program

Over the past week, LCV Victory Fund and our state affiliates have started the second pass of our turf and expanded our field organizing operation in AZ, MI, and NV. As voters prepare for mail ballots to arrive and early voting to begin, they are eager to discuss the candidates and learn more about their plans for important issues like inflation and the economy, reproductive rights, and climate action.

As announced last week, we’ve expanded the budget for our 2022 field organizing effort with state affiliates and partners to more than $16 million. Organizers are knocking doors in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The Georgia organizing effort is run by Family Friendly Action PAC, with major support from the New American Jobs Fund, a joint effort of LCV Victory Fund and the United Steelworkers (USW Works).

Results to date:

  • 560,164 door knocks
  • 78,808 successful contacts with our targeted voters
  • 1,920 Vote by Mail sign ups
  • 5,386 commit to vote cards collected
  • 7,940 vote tripling sign ups

Anecdotes from the doors:

  • Michigan: In Grand Rapids, we spoke with Ashley about the upcoming midterm election. She will be voting for Governor Gretchen Whitmer and State Representative Rachel Hood in November. As a teacher, she supports their plans to get rid of lead pipes in schools.
  • New Hampshire: In Rye, we spoke with Tierney about the upcoming midterm election. Even though she rarely votes, she plans to vote for Senator Maggie Hassan, and the Democrats in November. She can’t support a cause or party that is pro-life. She explained that she and many of her friends are worried that the Roe v. Wade decision could negatively affect their lives.
  • Nevada: In Reno, we spoke with Michelle, a 50-year-old voter, about the upcoming midterm election. Michelle said that environmental issues are the most important topic because the environment affects all people regardless of their political stance. Michelle said she will be voting for Gov. Sisolak, Sen. Cortez Masto, and Nevada Senate candidate Julie Pazina in November due to their support for climate action and clean energy jobs.
  • Wisconsin: In Green Bay, we spoke with Martha, who is in her 80s, about the upcoming midterm election. She has already cast her ballot for Governor Tony Evers and Mandela Barnes. Martha said she’s passionate about making prescription medication more affordable. Many of her friends have diabetes and take insulin, which is absurdly expensive in the United States.

Paid Media Updates

  • The second wave of the Climate Voters Mobilization program continues in dozens of states, with candidate-specific versions “Breathe” and “Generation” airing on multiple digital platforms.
  • Conservation Voters of New Mexico Verde Voters Fund launched a new ad campaign this week, “Sold” highlighting Mark Ronchetti’s climate hypocrisy and donations from the oil and gas industry.
