RICHMOND, VA. (Sept. 29, 2020) – LCV Victory Fund and NRDC Action Votes are launching a joint $750,000 television advertising campaign targeting Republican Nick Freitas for taking money from polluters and voting to allow chemicals linked to cancer in our drinking water.

The joint outside spending campaign is one of the largest of its kind in a congressional race by environmental advocates, demonstrating the importance of Virginia’s seventh congressional district and the danger of electing Freitas. Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger earned a 97% score from the League of Conservation Voters last year.

“For Nick Freitas, special interest money is more important than our health. Virginians deserve representatives in Congress who will stand up for them, not corporate polluters,” said Emily Crerand, National Campaigns Director, LCV Victory Fund. “We need to keep Abigail Spanberger in Congress, fighting for tough standards that reduce toxic chemicals in our drinking water.”

“Nick Freitas is blatantly lying about his record. The voters of Virginia want representatives who will stand up and protect our water from cancer-causing chemicals, but Nick Freitas is standing with his polluter pals,” said Jossie Steinberg, director of NRDC Action Votes. “The choice in this election is clear, which is why we have made it a top priority.”

A 2020 poll of battleground House districts by LCV Victory Fund, NRDC Action Votes, EDF Action and House Majority PAC’s found that environmental messaging can swing competitive House races. Support for clean water and holding polluters accountable is especially persuasive with voters.

Script:

We know Nick Freitas supports a plan to let insurance companies deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.
But there’s more. Nick Freitas took thousands from corporate polluters … and voted to let them hide toxic chemicals that can contaminate our drinking water. He even voted against protecting our drinking water from chemicals linked to cancer.
For Nick Freitas, special interest money is more important than our health.
