What will YOU do in 2020 to prevent a climate catastrophe while we still have time?

In anticipation of the most important election of our lifetimes, LCV Victory Fund has launched the most ambitious campaign in our history to elect candidates who will fight for climate solutions that confront the toxic legacy of environmental injustice. Our ClimateVote2020 campaign is a detailed, research- and data-driven plan to mobilize more than 7.5 million targeted voters in key constituencies in battleground states in order to:

Elect a pro-environment president

Replacing Trump with a pro-climate candidate is of the utmost urgency to our country, democracy, and planet.

Win a pro-climate majority in the U.S. Senate

We must defend key champions and elect 3-4 new pro-climate senators in order to enact just and equitable climate legislation in 2021.

MAINTAIN A PRO-CLIMATE MAJORITY IN THE U.S. HOUSE

The pro-climate majority in the House is currently the lone federal defense against the Trump administration’s attacks on our health and environment. It must be maintained at all costs.

How We Win in 2020

TARGET VOTERS WHO CAN BE MOVED ON OUR ISSUES
Public concern about climate and the environment is surging and is likely to be a decisive issue for voters in November. Our research in battleground states has identified key groups of voters—including environmental swing voters, third-party and opt-out voters, and infrequent voters—who are persuaded by climate-based messages and communications.
PUT EACH DOLLAR TO WORK IN AS MANY RACES AS POSSIBLE
Our top priority will be campaigns in presidential battleground states where we can also impact Senate, House, and/or governors’ seats. Targeted programs including television, mail, digital, and other direct voter contact to turn out low-propensity voters can help impact multiple levels of the ballot.
Engage early and aggressively
We will use early TV, digital and mail communications both to respond to attacks on climate champions and to define our opponents. This includes in the presidential race, where we will prevent Trump from “greenwashing” his record and making a case to swing voters.
LEVERAGE EFFECTIVE PARTNERSHIPS
With so much at stake in 2020, we are working closely with allies to ensure that our efforts complement, rather than duplicate, each other. LCV Victory Fund is a trusted partner to other leading independent, progressive, and labor groups working to elect candidates who will fight for our values.

Pete Maysmith, Senior Vice President, Campaigns
Prior to joining LCVVF in the fall of 2017, Pete was the executive director of Conservation Colorado, the largest state-based environmental group in Colorado. Over the course of his 29 year career in advocacy and politics, Pete has lobbied, organized, run campaigns, raised millions of dollars and hired and trained dozens of exceptional staff. He graduated in 1991 from Duke University with a Public Policy degree and graduated with honors from the University of Denver school of law in 2008. He lives in Denver with his wife and two red haired daughters.
Emily Crerand, National Campaigns Director
Emily has over 10 years of political and campaign experience. She most recently served as Rep. Harley Rouda’s Chief of Staff and was part of the team that took back the House in 2018. Emily has held several senior level roles in campaigns and committees including at the DSCC and with Senators Heitkamp and Gillibrand.
Megan Jacobs, National Campaigns Director
Megan is an Ohio native with more than a decade of experience in campaigns. Most recently, she was the Deputy Director of the independent expenditure program at EMILY’s List. She has worked on campaigns around the country, including Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Illinois Congressman Bill Foster and a variety of races for the DNC and the DCCC.
Dawn Cohea, Director of Data and Analytics
Before arriving at LCV, Dawn worked and consulted for a number of campaigns including Hillary for America in 2016, and also spent time within the renewable energy sector. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science and has focused on the impact of environmental issues within disadvantaged communities in her graduate thesis while obtaining her Master’s in Education, Curriculum and Instruction. She also has helped conduct several data and analytics trainings within the progressive movement, more recently with the Democratic National Committee.
Emily Samsel, National Press Secretary
Prior to joining LCV in spring 2019, Emily was press secretary for Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo’s 2018 re-election campaign. She previously worked for SKDKnickerbocker, Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, MSNBC, and President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. Emily is a native of Asheville, North Carolina, an alumni of the George Washington University, and proud dog mom to 10-year-old rescue dog Jack the Jack Russell Terrier. The 2020 elections offer the best hope for our nation to win the large-scale action needed to avert climate catastrophe, confront the toxic legacy of environmental injustice, and transition to a clean sustainable future.

With the window for effective action closing by the day, our nation’s environmental challenges require political solutions. However, we will not win an extremely close election without planning, commitment, and a massive mobilization of voters across the country.
