Fitz Johnson

2026 Dirty Dozen in the States

Georgia Public Service Commissioner (PSC), District 3

Nominated by Georgia Conservation Voters Action Fund

Georgia’s Public Service Commission (PSC) is an elected body that regulates electricity, natural gas, and telecommunications across the state — and its decisions shape whether Georgia moves forward or falls behind on climate. Fitz Johnson was appointed to the PSC in July 2021 and later lost his bid for reelection in 2025. During his time on the Commission, he voted at least ten times to raise rates on customers, costing the average Georgia family more than $500 a year. After losing reelection but before the end of his term, he even cast one more vote leaving the door open for his Republican colleagues to pass on the costs of storm damage onto ratepayers instead of the utility, which they did this past May.

Utility executives and fossil‑fuel interests have poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into PSC campaigns, and nearly 70% of Johnson’s contributions came from companies and individuals connected to the corporations the Commission is supposed to regulate. Beating Fitz Johnson again would keep environmental champions on the PSC, opening the door to an outright 3-5 pro-climate majority on the body to fight for consumers and advance a strong climate agenda for Georgia.
